Gemstones for the Libra

Gemstones associated with the Signs of the Zodiac.
It is not widely known that each sign has several possible associated gemstones. As well as being associated with zodiac signs, stones may be related to months of the year.
Libra: September 24-October 23
Strongly associated with the opal (considered by many to be unlucky,) rose quartz, emerald and malachite are also stones with an affinity for the Libra. Venus is the ruling planet for Librans.
Opal
The opal was once considered a symbol of hope, bringing the wearer/keeper love and lasting happiness. It is a stone defying description, as it contains fire sparks, delicate colors and a full spectrum of color. Formed from the skeletons of tine shells and animals, opals are very porous and are at least 30% water. As a consequence of this, they should never be immersed in water or brought into contact with oils (those with opal rings take note!).
To the ancients, especially the Greeks and Romans, the opal was thought to give direction if held between the eyes and was known as the “stone of vision” or “gem of hope”. They also believed it would look after both children and the arts and was described as “the gem of the Gods”.
A strong healing stone, said to enhance intuition, help with eyesight (It is sometimes called the “ophthalmic “ or “eye stone”) and bring relaxation, to the point of total peace,
Opal can be used to put the wearer/keeper in touch with his or her higher self. Opal is reputed to lose its luster if touched by an unfaithful lover, and was considered to be unlucky because of its variable color. Used by those with lung complaints, it is also said to help with the assimilation of proteins into the system.
The opal will increase in power if worn with the lapis lazuli and is especially helpful to those born in October.
Malachite
Malachite is another healing stone, its green stripes having the ability to soothe and bring about restful sleep, as well as aid in circulation difficulties and balance the emotions. Containing copper, malachite is also useful in treating cases of rheumatism (those affected by this complaint may like to know that other copper- based gemstones are turquoise and chrysocolla? And toothache. It is also called the “peacock stone”, a name given to it in Roman times, when it was believed to help with colds, bleeding, vertigo and teething problems in babies. It is said to attract love to its wearer and in the USA is thought to bring wealth (or love of money). Malachite is and exceptionally good stone to use in meditation.
Rose Quartz
Rose Quartz is said to be capable of changing negative energies into positive energies. Rose Quartz is often called the “stone of unconditional love”, pink being associated with this quality. It is thought to help diffuse stressful situations and heal emotional wounds when kept in a living room.
Excellent to use for migraines and headaches, Rose Quartz promotes peace and healing, stimulates the imagination and intellect and reduces feelings of anger, resentment and quilt. Said to increase fertility (possibly because of its association with love), Rose Quartz is one of the strongest healing stones available.  Lucky and unlucky stones.
Many stones are considered to be lucky and since early times have been used as means of protection. For those people interested in astrology, having considered the stones mentioned for their signs, it is worth pointing out that some sources believe that some stones are to be avoided at all costs.
For example:
Cancer- avoid opal and lapis lazuli.
Other traditional suggestions include linking lucky stones with hours of the day and days of the week.
